Hey All! It's been too long since I last posted so I thought I'd take this opportunity share how well a DIY sunscreen worked for me!
Okay, so anybody who knows me, knows that even a short period of time out in the sun can get me burnt. It's usually around 10 minutes in direct sunlight that I'll start to get red speckles and itchy. Not fun and needless to say it has been the main factor as to why I'm usually inside during the day even though I enjoy being outside. (I love hiking and camping and just for my own comfort I've always looked for shady areas or worn long sleeves and pants... Which in summer isn't all that comfortable due to the heat.)
I remember one time I was a nanny for my cousins. It was summer and they had a beach house in the family. I tried all of their sunscreens (they had them in pretty much every SPF) but none of them worked, plus my skin is sensitive to the chemicals they contain. I ended just forgoing them and riding it out looking like a lobster. (no essential oils were available to me at that time.)
Anyways, I went hiking yesterday at the Redwood Regional Park. Again, I chose this one because of the shade and because I prefer scenery with lots of trees to dead grasses and a few oak trees. Although it was shady there were still plenty of sunny locations along the trails. Before leaving, I applied a mixture of 20 drops Carrot Seed, 10 drops Lavender, and 2 oz. Coconut oil to all of my exposed skin. I hiked for about an hour and a half (I know, short, but we didn't want to get stuck in traffic) and encountered plenty of sunny patches, but instead of getting pink speckled and itchy my skin just had a VERY faint even toned pink tinge. That's it. No speckles and no itches. I was extremely pleased! Today I actually have a light tan! Normally after burning it would take a couple of days (in which my skin might be peeling) for a vague tan to appear.
I now feel more free to go outside and enjoy myself than I have since I was a kid!
